Winter Clothing Recommendations for Outdoor Learning & Nature Play

Staying warm and dry during outdoor activities is key to enjoying your time in nature. Here’s a comprehensive guide to winter gear for families participating in Ocean State Kids

1. Base Layers

The foundation of staying warm starts with moisture-wicking materials like polyester or merino wool. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture and can lead to chills. Choose long-sleeved tops and snug but comfortable long underwear.

2. Insulated Mid-Layer

Add fleece or wool sweaters over the base layer for warmth. A lightweight down jacket can also work well, especially if you and your child will be active outdoors.

  • Budget Option: Savers in Fall River is a great spot to find secondhand mid-layers. Even a classic hoodie works!

  • Splurge: For something luxurious, Quince offers amazing cashmere sweaters. The Fisherman Quarter Zip is pricey but exceptionally warm—perfect to snag during a sale.

3. Outer Layer

Your outermost layer should be waterproof and breathable to shield you from wind, rain, or snow. Look for jackets and pants that allow for movement while keeping drafts out.

  • For Adults:

    • Waterproof Fleece-Lined Pants from Amazon are a game changer. Paired with a fleece base layer, you’ll barely feel the cold. They’re also warm enough to wear alone—perfect for winter walks.

4. ACCESSORIES

Don’t overlook the little things—they make a big difference!

  • Mittens: Opt for waterproof mittens for snow play.

  • For Kids: The Outdoor School Shop has a great selection of Rain Mitten Gloves. Choose fleece-lined options for lightweight warmth and better hand mobility.

  • Neck Warmers: Turtle Fur Neck Warmers are versatile and practical. They protect the neck and face and can double as a hat. Plus, they don’t fall off like scarves!

  • Socks: Insulated wool socks are essential.

  • For Kids: Walmart’s Lovely Ann Wool Socks come in affordable multipacks.

5. FOOTWEAR

Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction are a must for both kids and adults.

  • For Kids: These insulated rain boots are a quick and convenient option for little ones. They’re easy to slip on, making them perfect for quick outings or as a backup pair in the car.

  • For Adults & Kids: Merrell Moab Shoes are great year-round for their comfort and versatility, though not waterproof.

  • For Adults: For a reliable waterproof option, the Merry People Tully Boots are fantastic and stylish enough for everyday wear.

Investing in the right gear ensures your family stays comfortable and enjoys the magic of the outdoors, even in winter. These recommendations balance practicality with affordability, making it easier to gear up for your next adventure with Ocean State Kids!

ABOUT OCEAN STATE KIDS at The Norman Bird Sanctuary

Ocean State Kids has partnered with the Norman Bird Sanctuary and is offering two programs: Aquidneck Island Kids (Ages 5 - 9 years) and Little Tweets (Ages 0 - 5 years) One of our core principles is that we believe nature is the ultimate classroom, and we’re excited to call the Norman Bird Sanctuary our new campus until mid-June 2025.

Through outdoor education we offer childhood experiences that cater to each child’s developmental needs. We emphasize the importance of parent involvement, aiming to empower parents to become their child’s most influential teacher and advocate. Your role as a parent is crucial in nurturing a lifelong passion for learning.

Why do we do it?

Because Ocean State Kids is committed to protecting childhood at all costs — meeting children’s needs without imposing rules, assessments, or societal pressures. We aim to equip parents with the tools and resources to consciously connect with their families, and lastly, we like to provide a space for a child’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity to flourish. Kids learn best when they have the freedom to pursue their interests in a supportive environment and OSK believes that nature is the best classroom.  By nurturing creativity & curiosity in the great outdoors, we are igniting their desire to understand the world around them and raising all-around awesome humans.
