Parenting in the Wild: How Nature School Benefits More Than Just the Kids

When we think about nature school, we often focus on how it benefits our kids—sparking curiosity, building resilience, and fostering a love for the outdoors. But what if we told you that parent-led nature programs are just as transformative for us grown-ups? From building confidence to finding moments of zen, these programs offer a whole new perspective on parenting and personal growth.

Empowerment, Confidence & Personal Growth

This is our mission: empowering parents to become their child's most influential teacher. Taking an active role in your child’s education builds your confidence in your ability to teach, guide, and support their growth. Witnessing the magic of their bloom will fill your heart to the brim. Teaching and exploring with children often inspires us to pick up new skills, hobbies, and knowledge about the environment. And let’s be real, there’s nothing quite like the pride of watching your child’s milestones and knowing you played a hands-on role in the process.

A Daily Dose of Physical Activity

Getting outside and participating in outdoor adventures keeps us parents moving. Honestly, putting on three layers of winter gear? That’s a workout in itself! Programs like Little Tweets at the Norman Bird Sanctuary offer miles of trails to explore, giving us a chance to burn energy, break a sweat, and feel alive. Who needs the gym when nature is calling?

Serious Stress & Anxiety Relief

Spending time in nature is a proven stress-buster, offering a natural reset for the mind and soul. I’m usually weighed down by anxiety and fog until I step outside. But as soon as I’m out there, all the pressure melts away. The fresh air clears my head, and for a little while, it’s just me, my child, and the world around us. It’s magic.

Building a Supportive Community & Friendships

Parent-led programs connect you with like-minded families, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. Honestly, most of my closest friends are people I’ve met through Ocean State Kids, and I couldn’t be more grateful. We get to meet up at least once a week—ONCE A WEEK! How many friends do you see that often? It’s a gift.

Child Experts All Around Us

One delightful surprise? Many parents in these programs have backgrounds in Early Childhood Development, Education, or were once preschool teachers! How lucky are we to have a wealth of expertise in our midst? Let’s savor every drop of wisdom they’re willing to share—it’s like a parenting masterclass in disguise.

Actually Become a Naturalist

Spending time outdoors regularly will have you embracing mindfulness and rediscovering a sense of wonder. I never imagined I’d be able to identify so many plants and animals, but after a year with Ocean State Kids, here I am, a self-proclaimed naturalist. Their adorable Wildlife and Trail Guides make learning even more fun.

Time for Reflection & Patience

Nature-based learning slows the pace, giving us time to step back, reflect, and truly soak in meaningful moments with our children. Plus, tackling the challenges of outdoor adventures helps us develop patience and resourcefulness—both essential parenting skills. And let’s not forget the ultimate endurance test: walking at “toddler pace.” Now that’s an extreme sport in patience!
