Taking your kids out for a nature scavenger hunt in the woods is an incredibly engaging and educational activity. It's the best! Recently, we explored Weetamo Woods in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and embarked on this delightful adventure, collecting an array of natural treasures. Using a simple egg carton, we divided the sections by color and set out to find items matching each hue. This hands-on activity not only keeps children entertained but also promotes physical activity and enhances their understanding of nature.
Materials Needed:
An empty egg carton
Paint or colored markers (to mark sections of the carton with different colors)
A small bag or basket (for extra collections)
During our walk in Weetamo Woods, we collected various colorful items to fill our egg carton. We found the following:
(Pink) Beach Rose, (Orange) Chicken of the Woods Mushroom, (Red) Berry of the Tatarian Honeysuckle, (Yellow) is unknown for sure but possibly a Lotus Corniculatus, (Blue) Chicory Wild Flower, (Purple) Wild Clover, (Green) Wild Fern, Tree Moss, and an unknown white flower, and (Brown) Turkeytail Mushroom & "Teeny Tiny' Acorns as my son would say!
This no-cost activity provided endless fun and sparked curiosity in the natural world around us. The importance of this activity extends beyond just having fun. It helps children with color identification as they search for specific colors in nature. It also encourages physical activity as they walk, bend, and reach for their discoveries. Spending time in nature has numerous benefits, including reducing stress and increasing concentration. By engaging in this scavenger hunt, children also develop observational skills and a deeper appreciation for the environment. So, next time you're looking for a fun and educational outdoor activity, head to Weetamo Woods with your egg carton and let the adventure begin!
